How did Zen Yarn Garden come to be?

Roxanne: Zen Yarn Garden is a labour of love—love of colour and love of yarn that all began in our kitchen in 2005. Fast forward 10 years and our business has grown into a full-time husband and wife owned company with the yarn colouring being done in a warehouse dye studio space with 10 employees assisting in the process of getting our yarns from our dye pots into customer’s hands.

Between your “One of a Kinds” & the “Semi Solids,” I think I saw every color imaginable—how do you decide on a new combination?

Roxanne: Our colour combinations are inspired by many different factors and can come from things like artist’s masterpieces, landscapes, scenic views and a lot of the times, by trial and error by deciding to throw colours together in the dye pot. It’s a bit like a magic colour pot where even we are surprised by what colour combinations come out!

What’s been the biggest challenge of turning a passion into a business?

Without passion, we’d have never created our business. Ensuring we maintain our passion has always been our biggest challenge. Passion has kept us grounded and helped us to persevere through all the myriad of challenges one faces when building a business. When you are working 12 hour days without a weekend or day off for close to 3 years straight or you can’t sleep at night because your business just assumed a risk by moving into a leased commercial space, it’s passion that guides you through. Passion started our business venture and passion is the guiding factor as we grow our business.

How has ShipStation helped you with your business?

Roxanne: ShipStation has been integral to our business efficiencies. By using ShipStation, we are able to not only get packages out quickly but we are also able to save on time spent on the task of shipping when all we really would prefer is to be creating beautiful yarns.

What’s your favorite ShipStation feature?

Roxanne: My favourite ShipStation feature is the ability to bulk print shipping labels for orders that are the same for several customers. Just set the shipping parameters, hit print and within minutes, 100s of labels are printed!
