The power of SEO is important if you’re looking to drive holiday sales. According to a recent survey, when looking for ideas and inspiration, shoppers look to Google Search.
Sure organic searches are great, but who has time to do extensive SEO during the fourth quarter? Nobody! If you have a holiday gift guide on your website, it’s time to optimize it’s searchability. We’re sharing some simple ways to tweak your existing website to make it more SEO-friendly. Read on for some tips on how to do this effectively.
Find Google Keywords
You may be thinking.. Ugh! Keywords! But don’t worry. You can minimize the time you spend on keyword research by looking up keywords that contain the word “gift.” Use free tools such as Google Keyword Planner to find current keywords and phrases that will help you rank high during the holiday season.
Here’s what I found when I did a recent search for “Christmas gift,” using the last month (October 2018) on Google’s Keyword Planner:
To my surprise the phrase “gift guide” wasn’t in the top 20 or even top 200 keywords related to Christmas gifts. This is something to keep in mind when writing for your online business.
You can do this by creating categories in your guide, such as “Gifts for Men” or “Gifts for Her.” Under each gift, include descriptive language about who the gift is for and utilize keywords that best fit. Key in mind, there are many creative ways to say a gift is meant for men. You may mention that the gift is perfect for dads, uncles, grandfathers, brothers, and much more. While these words might not be in the top 20 keywords, you can be sure that online shoppers are searching for gifts for these folks.
In addition, be sure to always include an SEO-friendly title and meta description for your holiday posts. Here’s an example from The Grommet:
When you click on “Gifts for Her, Unique Gifts for Women,” you get to this page:
Keep the title to 60 characters or less so Google doesn’t cut it off. And of course, avoid keyword stuffing. Examples of titles for categories of gifts: “Gifts for Him – Goodwear” or “2018 Gifts for Tweens – Creation Crate.” The meta description shows up below the title in searches, and is about 155 characters. You use it to summarize a page’s content. This is where you can include more details, keywords, and a call-to-action. The call-to-action is important because it’s what drives traffic to your website.
Update Gift Guide For SEO
Early shoppers are different than last-minute shoppers. If you want to get both types of customers, consider changing your wording later in the season. For example, the week before Christmas you could use phrases such as “Gifts That Will Arrive Before December 25” or something fun like “Last-Minute Gift Options That Look Like You Spent Hours Finding.”
Carving out time during the busy holiday season to do some SEO optimization is well worth it. Start by making some quick keyword changes, utilizing holiday-specific phrasing, and including descriptions throughout your gift guides.
