When that venture sold, the family needed a new direction. The answer was obvious: the sport they couldn&#8217;t stop playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We saw an opportunity to create pickleball&#8217;s first lifestyle brand that focused on creating high-performance equipment,&#8221; Barnes explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What we were able to do is make pickleball cool,&#8221; added Tom Barnes, Director of R&amp;D and Mike&#8217;s brother. &#8220;Which, at the time, pickleball was not cool.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then COVID hit, and everything changed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We went from one employee to 200,&#8221; Tom explained.&nbsp;Today, <a href=\"http:\/\/selkirk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Selkirk<\/a> is the number one brand in pickleball, operating out of an 80,000-square-foot facility in Hayden, Idaho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"610\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Selkirk-brothers-1024x610.jpeg\" alt=\"Selkirk brothers pickleball match\" class=\"wp-image-73583\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Selkirk-brothers-1024x610.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Selkirk-brothers-768x458.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Selkirk-brothers-1536x915.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Selkirk-brothers-2048x1220.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Selkirk-brothers-scaled.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A foundation to build on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Through every stage of that growth, one system remained at the center of their shipping operations\u2014but not just as an off-the-shelf tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;ShipStation really has been our partner from the very beginning. When we were a small brand, we had one shipper, all the way up to now, where we operate a much larger team, utilize the APIs, and build custom processes on it.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Mike Barnes, Co-Founder &amp; Co-CEO, Selkirk<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That last part is key. Rather than outgrowing <a href=\"\/\">ShipStation<\/a> and migrating to an enterprise system, Selkirk&#8217;s development team built on top of the <a href=\"http:\/\/shipengine.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">API<\/a>, creating custom infrastructure tailored to their specific needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We build our own supporting services behind and around ShipStation,&#8221; Tom explained. &#8220;But we always have had ShipStation\u2014that&#8217;s always been like the focal point for our shipping operations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/pickleball-paddles-selkirk.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73592\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/pickleball-paddles-selkirk.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/pickleball-paddles-selkirk-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building custom infrastructure without starting from scratch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For a company experiencing explosive growth, the alternative to an API-first approach would have been painful: either cobbling together carrier integrations manually or ripping out their shipping infrastructure every time they hit a new scale milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ShipStation API gave Selkirk&#8217;s team a different path.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Selkirk ships through UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL. Building those four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipengine.com\/shipping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carrier integrations<\/a> in-house would have been a massive undertaking\u2014an estimated six months of work for four developers. ShipStation API gave them access to all four through a single integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;A great thing about ShipStation is not only does it have a great UI if you&#8217;re working directly with the platform, but they also have a very robust API. Selkirk proved it in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;Scalability has been proven through us because we went from shipping basically nothing to shipping more paddles than we ever thought possible.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Tom Barnes, Director of R&amp;D, Selkirk<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hannah Farrell, Selkirk&#8217;s shipping department manager, sees the impact daily. Her team processes 900 to 1,000 orders per day across retail, wholesale, and direct-to-consumer channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have several different departments within shipping,&#8221; Farrell explained. &#8220;Retail, wholesale, programs\u2014we&#8217;re all processing orders at the same time.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The automation capabilities\u2014accessible through both the UI and the API\u2014keep operations running efficiently. Batch processing and presets reduce Selkirk&#8217;s label processing time by roughly half. Before, the receiving team had to manually research each return to determine whether it was tied to a claim. The API integration eliminated that step entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growing into the platform, not out of it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Every year, it feels like we&#8217;re running a different company, and it changes a lot,&#8221; Mike said. &#8220;Being able to stay ahead of the game, stay competitive, not just rest on your laurels\u2014that&#8217;s very important in this industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For companies facing that kind of growth, the typical choice is between a tool you&#8217;ll outgrow or an enterprise system that&#8217;s overkill for where you are today.
