By the time your order volume triples, it’s too late to start building automation. That’s the lesson peak season teaches every seller who learns it the hard way.

Without ShipStation’s batch tools and Automation Rules, our team would spend hours each day manually configuring individual shipments. During peak season when we might process 10,000+ orders in a day, that would be physically impossible with our current team size.

Why peak season breaks manual shipping
--------------------------------------

During a normal week, choosing a shipping service, comparing rates, and deciding which carrier handles which order is manageable. During peak, it’s not. Volume spikes. Staff is stretched. Every manual decision that takes ten seconds in July takes thirty seconds in December—when you can least afford it.

Automation rules eliminate those decisions. The rule fires automatically based on conditions you set once. Get it right before peak, and it runs thousands of times without intervention.

The sellers who cruise through peak aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest teams. They’re the ones whose automation was already running.

Real companies. Real automated cost savings.

Rule 1: Route by weight
-----------------------

Weight is the single most reliable predictor of shipping cost—and one of the first variables carriers use to price services. A rule that automatically assigns a shipping service based on order weight means you’re not paying Priority rates on lightweight packages, and you’re not shipping heavy orders on a service that can’t handle them.

![shipstation automation rule route by weight](https://www.shipstation.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/shipstation-automation-rule-route-by-weight-1024x472.png)During peak, this rule alone can significantly reduce rate overpayment. Pair it with state-based logic—[automatically routing Hawaii and Alaska orders](https://ship.shipstation.com/automations/rules/0?tab=workflows) to the right service, for instance—and you’ve eliminated an entire category of manual decisions before the rush starts.

ShipStation automation already cuts clicks per order by 40%. [Routing by weight](https://ship.shipstation.com/automations/rules/0?tab=workflows) is the place most sellers start.

Before we fully implemented automation, printing labels in bulk would take several hours and often required multiple team members to manage the process. Now, thanks to automation, that task takes just minutes.

Rule 2: Match your service to the address type
----------------------------------------------

Most holiday orders go to homes. Most B2B shipping goes to commercial addresses. The two have different carrier rules, surcharges, and service behaviors—and the wrong match creates delivery failures and unnecessary costs.

A [residential address rule](https://ship.shipstation.com/automations/rules/0?tab=workflows) automatically assigns the right service based on where the order is going. The [commercial address version](https://ship.shipstation.com/automations/rules/0?tab=workflows) does the same for business deliveries. Set both and you stop paying residential surcharges on commercial shipments and stop routing home deliveries through services that don’t handle them cleanly.

Rule 3: Use tags to prioritize rush and VIP orders
--------------------------------------------------

[Tags are peak season’s best tool](https://ship.shipstation.com/automations/rules/0?tab=workflows) for triage. When an order comes in marked as priority, gifted, or from a high-value customer, an automation rule can immediately route it to a faster service—without anyone reviewing it manually.

At peak, a rush order can disappear into a queue of 500 fast. Instead of relying on a team member to spot the rush order in a sea of standard ones, the rule handles it the moment the tag is applied. The right order gets the right treatment automatically.

Real companies. Real operational transformation.

Rule 4: Shop rates by marketplace
---------------------------------

If you sell across multiple channels—Amazon, eBay, Shopify, your own site—each one carries different shipping requirements and SLAs. A rate that works for one marketplace might put you out of compliance on another.

A [marketplace-specific rate shopper rule](https://ship.shipstation.com/automations/rules/0?tab=workflows) automatically applies different rate criteria based on where an order originated. Your Amazon orders stay compliant. Your Shopify orders get your best rate. And you’re not manually checking carrier options across five channels during your busiest week of the year.

ShipStation customers using Rate Shopper have grown shipment volume more than 4.5 times. Automating rate selection by marketplace is where that growth becomes repeatable.

Rule 5: Set ship-from address based on store
--------------------------------------------

If you’re fulfilling from more than one location—two warehouses, a 3PL and a retail backroom, a main facility and overflow space—this rule is essential for peak.

It [automatically assigns the correct origin address](https://ship.shipstation.com/automations/rules/0?tab=workflows) based on which store or channel the order came from. That means the right carrier account, the right zone pricing, and the right label—without anyone manually selecting a ship-from location on each order. When you’re handling thousands of orders across multiple locations, this rule is what keeps the operation clean.

Each of our different warehouses goes into a separate section of the site, and we never had that type of segregation or access before. That’s been super cool to route orders and do segmentation, certain automations.

Rule 6: Insure high-value orders automatically
----------------------------------------------

Peak season means more high-value gifts in transit. It also means winter storms, icy roads, and doorsteps stacked with packages. That increases the risk of damage, loss, or theft, no matter how well you ship.

An [automation rule that triggers ParcelGuard insurance](https://ship.shipstation.com/automations/rules/0?tab=workflows) for orders above a certain value means you’re not reviewing each order individually to decide whether to insure it. Set your threshold once. Every qualifying order gets covered. It’s a small rule with a meaningful impact when a customer’s holiday gift arrives damaged.

You don’t have to build these from scratch
------------------------------------------

Here’s the part worth knowing: these six rules are available as templates in ShipStation’s Automation Template Library. They’re mostly built. You customize the conditions to match your operation, then activate.

That’s a significant difference from starting with a blank rule and constructing the logic yourself. Templates give you the structure; you fill in your specifics.

Peak season is coming. The rules that will carry you through it take less than an hour to set up—if you start now.

We use automation rules for everything. I think I get the most out of my money.
