Somewhere in the country right now, a cat has been diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). A few years ago, that was a death sentence. Today, there’s a treatment—a medication that can stop the disease in its tracks. But it has to be compounded, it has to be shipped overnight, and it has to arrive on time.

That’s the kind of package PetScript Prolab Pharmacy ships every day.

Since 2000, PetScript has been formulating custom medications for vet clinics and pet parents across 47 states and Puerto Rico—preparations that don’t exist through large pharmaceutical companies. The pharmacy averages 130 packages a day with a team of two, and some of those packages carry more urgency than most shipments will ever see. Others go out with cold packs because the medication inside needs refrigeration. For PetScript, a late package is never just an inconvenience.

When the right ShipStation plan makes all the difference

PetScript had been using ShipStation since 2019, but mostly for the basics. Not all of their order data was flowing into ShipStation, so the team bridged the gaps manually. Returns were documented in a separate invoicing system rather than tracked through ShipStation. When remote staff or outside salespeople needed a shipping update, the question always landed on one person. The platform had more to offer—the team just hadn’t had a reason to explore it yet.

When ShipStation restructured its plan lineup, PetScript’s customer development representative took time to understand how the team actually worked before making a recommendation. PetScript moved to the Standard plan—adding automation, support for up to 10 users, built-in returns and exchanges, and basic API access without additional carrier fees.

For a pharmacy where the wrong carrier choice can mean a refrigerated medication arrives warm or a life-saving drug misses its window, the ability to compare rates and services in one place isn’t a convenience—it’s essential. ShipStation’s Rate Shopper, powered by intelligence, automatically surfaces the cheapest, fastest, or best-value option across carriers so the team can make the right call on every shipment.

For Jennifer Northcutt, a member of PetScript’s two-person shipping team, that confidence is everything.

“I can choose the best carrier and the best price to ship overnight,” she said, “and I can access the tracking info the next day to make sure the package is delivered on time.”

Depending on the method—ground, overnight, or international—that rate comparison saves PetScript anywhere from $2 to $30 per package.

A smarter approach to returns

Before the upgrade, returns documentation lived in a separate invoicing system. If a shipment went out with an error—a wrong address, a medication that arrived after an animal had passed—the team would issue a call tag through ShipStation, but the reason and resolution lived elsewhere. There was no single place to see the full picture.

The upgraded ShipStation plan changed that. ShipStation’s returns tools centralize every return and call tag in one dashboard, with tracking linked to the original order, return reason, and resolution status. For PetScript, that means the team can now see patterns over time—including customers who request returns more frequently than usual—and respond before small issues become bigger ones.

“It’s helpful to be able to look in one place to see what returns and call tags we have issued. We can see if we have certain customers who request returns more than normal and try to find out what the issue may be.”

One platform, built for what’s next

The upgrade didn’t change what PetScript does—it changed how much effort it takes to do it well. Two hours of daily manual work reclaimed. Rate savings of up to $30 per package. Returns visibility that didn’t exist before. And a ShipStation plan that grows with the team rather than around it.

“It’s worth it, due to the time-saving manner of using ‘one-stop shopping’ to be able to select the fastest and most economical shipping carrier and to be able to print labels from one software,” Northcutt said. “The change is a great one. It is a fantastic ‘one-stop’ software for businesses of all sizes.”

For a pharmacy where every package carries real stakes—a pet’s health, a clinic’s trust, a medication that simply has to arrive—that kind of confidence in the platform is worth a lot.
