From Pop-Up to Scale-Up with ShipStation

When Ellie Degraeve’s newborn baby developed severe skin reactions to mainstream products, she embarked on a journey that would eventually transform into one of Australia’s leading eco-friendly retail businesses.

“After becoming a mum, I noticed my newborn had a terrible reaction to almost every mainstream product I used on her,” Degraeve recalled.

Shocked by harmful ingredients like petroleum in baby products, Degraeve launched a mission to find clean, eco-friendly solutions. She founded Go For Zero in 2018, starting with a pop-up store in Kunda on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. She quickly outgrew her space, expanding operations to her mother-in-law’s garage.

This early phase allowed Degraeve to test her range of toxin-free baby, skincare, and home products, and build a customer base through her local pop-ups before launching an ecommerce website.

“At the pop-up store, I had collected emails from customers and added them to a mailing list. I did get a few orders, but nothing that made me think this would be a successful business,” she said.

As Go For Zero expanded, so did its operational challenges, particularly shipping orders out to customers efficiently.

“At first, I only used Sendle for deliveries since most of my customers were local. I would even drop off the packages myself,” Degraeve explained.

The business used both Sendle and Australia Post on separate platforms, manually comparing shipping costs and inputting customer information for each order. Every day ended with Degraeve rushing to the post office before closing time.

“I kept thinking, ‘There has to be a better way!’” she said. “Our search for a multi-carrier platform came from this need to save time, easily compare shipping rates, and support our growth.”

Reflecting on the early days, Degraeve added, “It was incredibly inefficient and time-consuming, especially as our business grew. I can’t believe we operated like that for so long.”

As orders began to extend beyond the local area, it became clear that manual processes couldn’t keep up with the growing demand. These challenges significantly impacted their ability to process certain orders, particularly those involving PO box requests that required alternative shipping methods.

A Cleaner Path to Success

“Thanks to ShipStation, tasks that required more effort and resources can now be handled by just one or two people, which is a massive time and cost saving for us.”

The search for a more efficient shipping solution led Degraeve to explore various platforms, comparing features and prices to find the right fit. ShipStation stood out for its affordability, ease of use, and dedicated customer support, making it the ideal choice for Go For Zero’s growing business.

“ShipStation was the best option. We found the platform much easier to navigate and gained greater operational efficiencies than others.” Degraeve said. “But what really made the difference was their support team. We could easily pick up the phone and get help whenever we had an issue.”

Lauren Murfitt, operations manager at Go For Zero, agreed that ShipStation’s integration process was seamless and efficient.

“The ShipStation customer service team was incredibly responsive, making it easy for us to get started,” she said.

Integrating both Sendle and Australia Post into ShipStation allowed Go For Zero to automate its shipping processes, saving several hours a day. These efficiencies not only freed up time for other tasks but also minimized errors and supported the company’s next-day shipping commitments.

The Go For Zero team’s favorite ShipStation features include the automated shipping box measurement, which helps the warehouse team streamline packing, and the parcel tracking that allows them to proactively update customers on any delays. Murfitt also highlighted ShipStation’s Rate Shopper feature—an automated carrier selection tool—as a key advantage.

“This feature helps us to know we are always getting the best prices for our shipping needs,” she said.

Four years into the partnership, Go For Zero has effectively doubled its order volume without needing to increase staff numbers.

Investing in the Right Tools for a Growing Business

Degraeve offered some advice to other ecommerce businesses based on her experience.

“One of the biggest challenges today is the overwhelming number of tools and systems available—there’s always an email pushing the latest app to try. It can be tough to sift through all the options and figure out what’s actually worth the investment,” she said.

For a family-run business like Go For Zero, Degraeve says being mindful of where they spend their resources has been crucial to also align with their waste reduction values.

“Every dollar matters. That’s why we’re selective about where we invest. With ShipStation, we’ve found a solution that supports our growth, saving us time and money by keeping our operations efficient and cost-effective.”
